₹30,000 Crore Mega Shipbuilding Hub Approved in Durgarajpatnam, Andhra Pradesh: A Big Boost to India’s Maritime Growth

In a landmark move for India’s maritime and industrial sector, the Centre has approved a massive ₹30,000 crore mega shipbuilding hub in Durgarajpatnam (Dugarajapatnam), Andhra Pradesh. The ambitious project is expected to transform India’s shipbuilding capabilities, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and position the country as a global maritime powerhouse under the Make in India initiative. The proposed mega cluster is expected to become India’s first large-scale national shipbuilding and heavy industries park, significantly expanding the country’s maritime infrastructure.

The project will reportedly be developed with an estimated shipbuilding capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnage (GT), making it one of the biggest maritime infrastructure developments in the country. The government aims to reduce dependence on foreign-built ships while strengthening the fleet of India-flagged vessels.

According to reports, the government has already aggregated demand for approximately 437 vessels worth ₹2.2 lakh crore from government-backed entities across sectors such as defense, shipping, inland waterways, and energy. Domestic shipyards are expected to receive preference in procurement under the proposed strategy.

The approval of the ₹30,000 crore mega shipbuilding hub in Durgarajpatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marks a transformative moment for India’s maritime ambitions. If implemented successfully, the project could boost shipbuilding capacity, employment, exports, and industrial growth, while helping India establish itself as a global maritime manufacturing hub. With strong government backing and growing demand for domestic vessels, this mega investment could redefine India’s coastal economy in the coming years.
