Reliance Industries to build Meta's first Al-enabled data center in India
In a landmark development for India's digital infrastructure sector, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has partnered with Meta Platforms to develop the social media giant's first AI-enabled data centre in India. The hyperscale facility will be established in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with an initial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW), making it one of the country's largest AI-ready data centre projects. Meta will lease the facility from Reliance, marking its first built-to-suit data centre investment in India.
The new data centre will be designed, built, and operated by Reliance, offering end-to-end infrastructure solutions, including power, connectivity, cooling systems, and managed services. Scheduled for completion within the next two years, the facility has been planned with provisions for future expansion to support Meta's rapidly growing artificial intelligence workloads and global computing requirements. The project will strengthen India's position as an emerging hub for AI infrastructure and cloud computing.
The partnership builds on the long-standing relationship between Reliance and Meta, which already collaborate through Jio Platforms and AI-driven enterprise solutions based on Meta's Llama models. By locating the facility in Jamnagar, Reliance will leverage its extensive energy, water, and industrial infrastructure, including renewable energy assets, to provide a cost-efficient and sustainable operating environment for large-scale AI computing.
Industry experts view the project as a major milestone in India's ambition to become a global AI and digital infrastructure powerhouse. The AI-enabled campus is expected to stimulate investments in cloud services, semiconductor ecosystems, data centre technologies, and advanced digital applications while creating significant employment opportunities in construction, operations, and technology services. It also reinforces Gujarat's growing importance as a destination for hyperscale digital infrastructure projects.
