IIT And IIM Proposed For North Bengal
The West Bengal government has proposed the establishment of IIT and IIM in North Bengal, allocating funds in the State Budget 2026 as an initial step toward upgrading educational infrastructure in the region. The proposal aims to improve access to quality education and support the growing economic and tourism potential of the region.
The planned expansion is expected to focus on enhancing educational facilities, improving operational capabilities, and preparing the institutions for increased student enrollment. Upgraded infrastructure could pave the way for the introduction of additional academic programs, strengthening connectivity between North Bengal and other educational hubs across India.
Officials believe the project will play a crucial role in boosting tourism, trade, and investment in North Bengal. Cooch Behar, known for its rich heritage, royal palace, and proximity to popular tourist destinations in the Himalayan foothills and Northeast India, stands to benefit significantly from improved educational opportunities.
The educational expansion is also expected to support regional economic development by facilitating faster movement of people and goods. Improved connectivity could attract new business opportunities, encourage private investment, and generate employment during both the construction and operational phases of the project.
The budget allocation underscores the state's commitment to strengthening infrastructure in North Bengal. Once implemented, the upgraded IIT and IIM could emerge as important regional educational hubs, enhancing accessibility and contributing to the long-term growth of the district and surrounding areas.
