West Bengal Budget 2026: A proposal has been made to build an international-standard stadium and an indoor stadium in North Bengal.

Techno-Economic Survey Initiated for Metro Connectivity in Durgapur, Asansol, Siliguri, and Jalpaiguri"

n a major step toward expanding urban transportation infrastructure, the West Bengal government has initiated a techno-economic survey to assess the feasibility of introducing metro rail connectivity in Durgapur, Asansol, Siliguri, and Jalpaiguri. The study will evaluate the technical, financial, and operational viability of metro systems in these rapidly growing urban centers.

The survey is expected to examine factors such as population density, commuter demand, traffic congestion, land availability, projected ridership, and integration with existing transport networks. The findings will help determine the most suitable transit solutions and guide future infrastructure planning for these cities.

Among the proposed locations, Asansol-Durgapur, one of eastern India's largest industrial and urban corridors, has witnessed significant growth in population, industry, and commercial activity. A metro system could substantially improve mobility, reduce travel times, and support sustainable urban development in the region.

In North Bengal, Siliguri and Jalpaiguri have emerged as important economic, tourism, and transportation hubs connecting the Northeast, Bhutan, Nepal, and the rest of India. Metro connectivity in the region could help address increasing traffic congestion while enhancing connectivity between key residential, commercial, and transportation nodes.

The initiation of the techno-economic survey reflects the state's long-term vision of developing modern mass transit systems beyond Kolkata. If found feasible and subsequently implemented, these metro projects could transform urban mobility, stimulate economic growth, attract investments, and significantly improve the quality of life for millions of residents across West Bengal.
