Government To Transfer PSLV Rocket Technology To Private Companies
The Government of India has initiated a landmark move to transfer Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket technology to eligible private companies, marking a significant step in opening the country's space sector to industry participation. The initiative is being led by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), which has invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from Indian-owned and controlled companies interested in acquiring the technology. The transfer aims to create a robust domestic ecosystem for commercial launch vehicle manufacturing.
The PSLV is one of India's most successful launch vehicles, with a proven record of placing satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO), and other missions. Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the rocket has completed dozens of successful missions, launching Indian and international satellites with high reliability. By transferring this mature technology, the government seeks to leverage private sector capabilities while enabling ISRO to focus on advanced research and next-generation launch systems.
Under the technology transfer programme, selected companies will receive comprehensive technical know-how, manufacturing processes, quality assurance standards, and operational expertise required to build and integrate PSLV rockets. The move is expected to accelerate the growth of India's private space industry by enabling domestic firms to manufacture complete launch vehicles and compete in the rapidly expanding global commercial launch market.
The initiative aligns with India's broader space sector reforms, which encourage greater private participation in satellite manufacturing, launch services, and space-based applications.
