West Bengal Budget 2026: A proposal has been made to build an international-standard stadium and an indoor stadium in North Bengal.

Budget pushes for keeping establishments open 24x7

The West Bengal government has proposed a major reform to create a 24x7 business ecosystem by allowing eligible commercial establishments to remain open round the clock. Announced as part of the 2026–27 State Budget, the initiative aims to transform Kolkata and other urban centres into vibrant, globally competitive business destinations, supporting economic activity beyond traditional working hours. The proposal is expected to benefit sectors such as retail, hospitality, restaurants, IT-enabled services, healthcare, logistics, and entertainment while strengthening the state's overall investment climate.

The policy seeks to provide businesses with greater operational flexibility, enabling establishments to choose extended working hours based on customer demand rather than fixed closing times. Officials believe that a round-the-clock commercial environment will improve convenience for consumers, support shift-based industries, and enhance services for professionals working in sectors such as information technology, healthcare, transport, and emergency services. The move also aligns with the government's broader vision of promoting ease of doing business in West Bengal.

A key objective of the initiative is to stimulate employment and economic growth. Extended operating hours are expected to create new job opportunities across retail, security, transportation, food delivery, hospitality, facility management, and other support services. Industry stakeholders believe the reform could encourage higher consumer spending, attract additional private investment, and strengthen Kolkata's position as a leading commercial and business hub in eastern India.

To ensure the smooth implementation of the policy, the government has emphasized the need for robust supporting infrastructure, including improved public transport, enhanced law enforcement, better street lighting, and stronger safety measures, particularly for women employees working late-night shifts. Businesses opting for 24x7 operations will also be expected to comply with labour laws, employee welfare provisions, and other regulatory requirements.
