West Bengal Budget 2026: A proposal has been made to build an international-standard stadium and an indoor stadium in North Bengal.

Birbhum Defence Hub Planned

West Bengal has unveiled plans to establish a Defence Manufacturing Hub at Ahmadpur in Birbhum, marking a major step towards developing the state's defence and advanced manufacturing ecosystem. The proposed hub will be developed on the site of a former sugar mill and is expected to leverage Ahmadpur's strategic connectivity through railways, national highways, and the nearby Panagarh logistics and defence corridor. The initiative forms part of the state's broader industrial development strategy aimed at attracting high-value manufacturing investments.

To further strengthen the defence manufacturing ecosystem, the government has also proposed a second Defence Manufacturing Hub in Bankura. Together, the two hubs are expected to attract companies involved in defence equipment, aerospace components, precision engineering, electronics, and advanced materials. The twin-hub approach is intended to create an integrated supply chain, encourage technology partnerships, and generate significant employment opportunities across western West Bengal.

In another major industrial initiative, the state has announced plans for a high-tech semiconductor unit in Durgapur, expanding its focus beyond traditional manufacturing into strategic technology sectors. With its well-established industrial base, skilled workforce, and strong transport infrastructure, Durgapur is being positioned as a future centre for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. The project is expected to complement the state's ambitions in electronics, AI, and digital infrastructure.

Supporting these projects is a ₹5,000 crore industrial incentive framework, designed to attract large-scale domestic and international investments. The incentive package is expected to provide financial support for eligible projects, improve ease of doing business, and encourage investments in sectors such as defence, semiconductors, electronics, engineering, and advanced manufacturing. The policy aims to make West Bengal more competitive with other leading industrial states.

If implemented successfully, these initiatives could significantly transform West Bengal's industrial landscape by creating a robust defence and high-technology manufacturing ecosystem. The combination of defence hubs, semiconductor manufacturing, and investment incentives is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, strengthen the state's industrial capabilities, and position Bengal as an emerging destination for strategic manufacturing and advanced technology industries in eastern India.
