Tram Revival Expansion Planned With New Dakshineswar-kalighat Route
The West Bengal government has unveiled an ambitious plan to revive Kolkata's iconic tram network by restoring all previously discontinued routes and introducing a new tram corridor connecting Dakshineswar and Kalighat. The initiative aims to preserve the city's rich transport heritage while modernising one of Asia's oldest operating tram systems.
As part of the revival strategy, the proposed tram services are expected to feature modern air-conditioned, battery-operated trams, replacing conventional overhead electric wire systems. The government has also indicated that the upgraded network will focus on providing a cleaner, safer and more sustainable mode of urban transport.
The proposed Dakshineswar–Kalighat route is expected to improve connectivity between two of Kolkata's most significant religious destinations while promoting heritage tourism across the city. Officials are also exploring the possibility of extending the tram network to New Town, further expanding public transport options for commuters.
To assess the feasibility of the expansion, the state government has appointed RITES to conduct a detailed study of the tram network. The consultancy has been asked to submit its recommendations within 30 days, covering route restoration, infrastructure upgrades and future expansion opportunities.
