India Launches First Made-in-India EXIM Sea Cargo Container
India has achieved a major milestone in maritime manufacturing with the launch of its first Made-in-India Export-Import (EXIM) sea cargo container. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled the indigenously manufactured container at the Maersk–CONCOR Inland Container Depot in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant step towards strengthening India's logistics and container manufacturing capabilities.
The EXIM-grade container has been manufactured by the DCM Shriram Group and is built to meet international ISO and CSC safety standards, making it suitable for global shipping operations. The initiative aims to reduce India's dependence on imported shipping containers and improve resilience in global supply chains.
In a major boost to the initiative, global shipping giant A.P. Moller–Maersk has become the first international shipping line to procure an India-made EXIM container. The company also placed an additional order for 1,000 containers, reflecting strong global confidence in India's manufacturing quality and maritime ecosystem.
The launch supports the Government of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives by creating a domestic ecosystem for container production. It is expected to strengthen India's position in the global maritime value chain, promote exports, and encourage investments in logistics and shipping infrastructure.
With domestic production of EXIM containers now underway, India is moving closer to becoming a global hub for maritime manufacturing. The development is expected to enhance trade competitiveness, improve supply chain reliability, generate employment, and accelerate the country's long-term vision of becoming a leading global logistics powerhouse.
