🇮🇳 India's First Hydrogen-Powered Train Ready, Launch Scheduled from Haryana on July 17
India is set to achieve a major milestone in sustainable rail transport as its first hydrogen-powered train is scheduled to be launched from Jind, Haryana, on July 17. The pioneering train is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking India's entry into an elite group of nations operating hydrogen-powered passenger trains.
The hydrogen fuel-cell train will initially operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana. Unlike conventional diesel trains, it generates electricity through hydrogen fuel cells and emits only water vapour, making it a zero tailpipe-emission transportation solution. The project is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies.
The indigenously developed train features a 10-coach configuration, advanced hydrogen storage and safety systems, and a 1,200 kW hydrogen propulsion system. It is designed to operate at a service speed of around 75 km/h, with maintenance support planned from Delhi.
The launch represents a significant step towards modernising India's railway network while promoting green mobility and energy-efficient transportation. Successful deployment of the hydrogen-powered train is expected to pave the way for similar eco-friendly rail services across the country in the coming years.
