India will build a nearly 300-km underground pipeline to supply Yamuna River water from Haryana to Rajasthan under the 34,102 crore Yamuna Water Project
India is set to undertake one of its largest inter-state water infrastructure projects as Rajasthan and Haryana move ahead with the ₹34,102 crore Yamuna Water Project, which will transport Yamuna River water through a 295.5-km underground pipeline from Haryana to Rajasthan. The project follows the implementation of the long-pending 1994 Upper Yamuna water-sharing agreement after more than three decades.
The project will transfer Rajasthan's allocated share of Yamuna water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana through three large-diameter underground pipelines. It is designed to supply around 580 million cubic metres (MCM) of water annually between July and October while minimizing evaporation losses and improving the efficiency of water distribution.
The pipeline network is expected to significantly improve drinking water availability in the water-scarce districts of Sikar, Churu, and Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, while also benefiting Bhiwani and Fatehabad in Haryana. The project includes modern digital water management systems, inspection corridors, and associated infrastructure to ensure reliable long-term operations.
The Yamuna Water Project marks a major milestone in inter-state cooperation and India's water infrastructure development. Once completed, it is expected to strengthen regional water security, support sustainable resource management, and provide long-term relief to millions of residents across both states.
