Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Group is interested in setting up a semiconductor unit in Bengal
Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Group has expressed interest in establishing a semiconductor manufacturing unit in West Bengal, marking a potential boost for the state's ambitions to become a hub for advanced electronics and chip manufacturing. A delegation from Mitsubishi recently held discussions with senior state government officials to explore investment opportunities and evaluate suitable project locations.
According to West Bengal's Industry Minister, the state has offered land at Durgapur and Panagarh, two key industrial hubs with strong connectivity and existing manufacturing infrastructure. Company representatives are expected to revisit the state later this month to carry forward discussions and inspect potential project sites.
The proposed investment aligns with West Bengal's broader strategy to attract high-value industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres, and Global Capability Centres (GCCs). The state government is also preparing a new industrial policy aimed at improving ease of doing business and offering competitive incentives to large-scale investors.
If the project materialises, it would represent a significant milestone in strengthening eastern India's semiconductor ecosystem while supporting India's national objective of expanding domestic chip manufacturing and reducing dependence on imports.
